About Me
I started taking Tai Chi and QiGong in 1997 in Anchorage after having breast cancer and going thru chemotherapy at the end of 1996. When I began, I had very low energy and stamina and could barely hold my arms up. On my first visit, my teacher, Sifu Warren Pretlow, told me that these exercises would be very good for me and that they would help improve the quality of my life. Being an active person prior to my setback, I was all for that. Needless to say, I started out slowly in 1997 and have continued ever since. My health came back 10 fold. I have been cancer free for over 10 years and I feel great.
The good thing about these exercises is that you take them at your own pace. You do what you can and gradually your endurance increases.
I have been practicing self-cultivation thru the 24 Yang Style Tai Chi, many different QiGong forms and meditations for the last 10 years and have studied some Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as some Medical QiGong. I am hoping to share the Tai Chi and QiGong with you, so that you too can benefit as I have.
I am also a licensed massage therapist and have been practicing since 2005. I am a member of the American Massage Therapist Association (AMTA).
Food for Thought on our Health and Qi:
It starts at the embryological development of the body’s inner fascia and connective tissues.
At the time of conception, there are 4 energetic interactions, the mother, the father, heaven or universal energy and earth or environmental energy.
It is important that we are conceived in a healthy, loving manner and in a loving relationship. We all begin with ancestral Qi and with inherent strengths and weaknesses (that of our parents).
It is also important as to how the health of our parents were, mentally, physically and spiritually when we were conceived. If they were strong and healthy, then we will be born with a strong constitution. If they were sickly, had emotional problems or were in a weakened state, then we may be born with congenital problems or a weak constitution.
Another contributing factor is that, through out the pregnancy, the mother must take care of herself, mentally, physically, emotionally, nutritionally and environmentally, as anything that influences the mother’s body, mind, spirit or emotions will ultimately affect the fetus.
After birth, we have the ability to change the constitution that we were born with, if it were a weak one, or we have the ability to enhance our good fortune and continue improving the quality of our lives if we were born with a stronger constitution.
When we are born, we are born with the virtues of love, gentleness, kindness, respect, honesty, fairness and righteousness. These are the positive energies of our organs. When these virtues are abundant, life flows smoothly and efficiently. But as we get older and are influenced by those around us and the world as it is, we start accumulating our energies into negative emotions. We encounter more stress in our daily lives and the negative emotions, such as fear, anger, cruelty, impatience, worry, sadness and grief dominate our lives. These emotions affect our organs and our glands and can drain our life force (Qi), causing our bodies to function on less energy. These negative emotions can wear down the body’s resistance to disease even before any clinical evidence of disease exists.
Transforming our negative emotions into the virtuous energies we were born with will enhance our life force (Qi). We have the ability and means to do this by doing Tai Chi, QiGong, by doing healing meditations, remaining present, have good and nurturing relationships, maintain a good diet and a good and healthy lifestyle.
In doing these, we can detoxify our organs, become self regulated and re-establish our original virtues that we ere born with.
While doing your Tai Chi, QiGong or healing meditations, you will definitely be re-establishing your original virtues because Qi is the force behind all movement. Simply focusing the attention on an area of the body will cause increased activity in the nerves in that area. Muscular activity, lymphatic flow and blood circulation may also be affected. This in turn will remove our negative emotions and in doing so, improve your health and the quality of your life.
By maintaining our health and lifestyle, it can affect the physiological mechanics of aging. When we practice our exercises, they will help to support cellular functions which in turn will enhance longevity.
Another benefit of these exercises is that they will also enhance and promote our spiritual growth.
The secrets of Qi circulation have been passed down for thousands of years. Those in China, who were fortunate enough to receive this knowledge, experienced great improvements in their health and in the quality of their lives. We can become our own masters by focusing on our own spiritual growth rather than waiting for judgment for what we have neglected in our lives. We need to take responsibility for our own health and well being.
As we learn to control our life force, we gradually develop the means to control our own destinies. We are in charge of our own destinies, whether we choose to have a good quality of life or a bad quality of life, it is up to us. I am not saying that we will live forever or that you may never get sick, but we do have the ability to have a better quality of life while we are her.
